Decades without a tornado in Burlington

With the recent wind storm we had Sunday, it got us thinking back to the last tornado that swept through Burlington.

Des Moines County Emergency Management Coordinator Gina Hardin says she thinks it was back in the 80’s….

Hardin says we’ve been very lucky as a community to have gone so long without seeing one and she’s aware of all the rumors about why Burlington hasn’t witnessed a twister in decades…

She doesn’t think there’s much truth to those rumors and says we’re just lucky.

Although we haven’t had a tornado in a while, we’ve seen pretty strong winds, which can be just as dangerous. The safest place during a tornado is in a basement. If you’re without a basement, Hardin says to get yourself on the ground level and to the middle of the building.

Monday also kicked off the beginning of lightning awareness week. One thing they ask you to be aware of this week, is if you know a storm is coming, it’s a good idea to head inside before it gets very close….
