Flooding, Sewer Smell Force Post Office to Spread Out

The Burlington post office service counter has been closed all week because of the flooding and now the Postal Service is renting space for sorting mail at the old Tom’s Market on Division til further notice.

A USPS spokesman says customers can still get to their post office boxes at the North Main Street facility, but all other retail business is being handled at the West Burlington post office on Broadway.

Like a lot of other downtown businesses near the river, the (Burlington) post office basement is flooded, meaning no electricity, and the floodwater is mixed with sewage and the smell that comes with it.

The Burlington Apartments are in a similar situation, with sewer fumes throughout the building and no elevator service in the 9-story structure.
