Obituaries Friday July 11th

Edna Verlee Bush, age 93, formerly of Yarmouth, died Tuesday evening, July 8, 2014, at the Bickford Cottage in Burlington. Edna was born to John B. and Bessie Butler Vandemark on May 22, 1921 in Des Moines County. She married Roland Marshall Bush on February 20, 1943 at rural Mediapolis. He passed away on March 18, 2002.
She graduated from Sperry High School and Parsons College in Fairfield with graduate work at Utah State University and the University of Iowa. She was a lifelong member of the Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Grove and was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the White Star Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She taught at Pulaski High School before her marriage, then farmed for fifteen years and then taught in the Huron and Yarmouth buildings of the Mediapolis school district before retiring in 1977. They spent the winters in Texas and became residents of Pharr, Texas in 1994 before moving back to Iowa in 2000.
Edna enjoyed camping, travelling, reading, square dancing, music, crossword puzzles, and playing solitaire.
She is survived by three children, Barbara & Earl Wunder of Cottonwood, Arizona, David & Cathy Bush of Yarmouth, and Glenda Bush of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Sheryl Rendon, Elaine Dovzak, Kevin Bush, Steven Bush, Renee’ Hunerdosse, Darin Bush, Brandon Wlosinski, and Joe Wlosinski; six great granddaughters, Kaitlyn Rendon, Payton Bush, MacKenzie Dovzak, Carsyn Bush, Daniella Johnson, and Madilynn Hunerdosse; and five great grandsons, Hayden Bush, Conner Bush, Caleb Bush, Hunter Dovzak, and Kade Bush. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roland; and a sister.
The Funeral Ceremony for Edna Bush will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday. July 12, 2014, at the Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Grove, officiated by Rev. Shane McCampbell. Burial will follow at the Shinar Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2:00 to 800 PM on Friday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis with the family to meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 beginning with Eastern Star Rites at 6:00.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefits of the Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Mediapolis Public Library.

Larry Dale Sears, 77, of Macomb, IL passed away at 1:50 PM on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at the VA Medical Center, Iowa City, IA. He was born on June 11, 1937 near Dallas City, IL, the son of Gilbert LeRoy and Tressie Woodside Sears.

Larry served in the U.S. Army from September of 1960 until September of 1962. He was a truck driver and worked for Munson Trucking Company of Monmouth, IL, Midwest Connection of Iowa, and had retired from VSN of Abingdon, IL. Mr. Sears was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and NASCAR. He was also an avid Fisherman.

He is survived by a special friend, Betty Willemsen of Monroe, IA, two daughters, Marie Chockley of Goodfield, IL, and Lori of TX, two sons, Steven Sears of Clinton, IA, and Brian Sears of Industry, IL, 11 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, two brothers, Clinton Sears of LaHarpe, IL, and Harold “Shorty” Sears of Gallatin, TN, and several nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Derek, and one sister, Margie Evans.

Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, July 11, 2014 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, with Rev. Jim Clayton officiating. Burial, with military rites, will follow in the Pilot Grove Cemetery near Burnside, IL. A visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday, July 10, 2014 at the funeral home. Howard W. “Tim” Timmerman, 66, of Burlington, Iowa, died at his residence on Monday, July 7, 2014.

Born on July 26, 1947 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Howard G. and Lillian K. Turner Timmerman.

Tim graduated from Burlington High School. He worked as a Sanitation Custodian at Lance Co., West Burlington. He enjoyed golfing and socializing at The Beat.
He is survived by two sisters, Joyce Tweedy of Margate, Florida and Sherry Alexander of The Villages, Florida; one brother, Robert Timmerman of Colfax, Iowa ; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services for Tim Timmerman will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Prugh’s Chapel, Burlington, Iowa. Pastor Tyrone Henderson will officiate. Interment will be at New Sweden United Methodist Church Cemetery, Lockridge, Iowa.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday. A memorial has been established for Alzheimer’s Association. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.

Donald Eugene Gillis, 86, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa, on Wednesday, July 9, 2014.

Born on September 5, 1927 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Cecil A. and Eva C. Hand Gillis. He married Lani Miller on January 5, 1949 in Yuma, Arizona, they later divorced.
Don served his country as a Staff Sergeant in Korea in the U.S. Air Force. He worked as Assistant Supervisor & Court Reporter in Illinois for 21 years.
He was Past President and founding father of the Illinois Court Reporters Association, Cook County Court Reporters Association, Eagles Club, Moose Lodge and President of the Steamboat Senior Center. He enjoyed singing, dancing and fellowship with family and friends, especially those at the Senior Center.
He is survived by one sister, Delores Carter of Burlington, Iowa; one nephew, David (Pam) Carter of Rockford, Illinois; three nieces, Toni Johnson of Burlington, Iowa, Cynthia Riffel of Osage Beach, Missouri and Lori Gillis of Burlington, Iowa; and one first cousin, Nancy Pilger of Burlington, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Cecil Jr. Gillis; and brother-in-law, L. W. “Wally” Carter.

Cremation has been entrusted to Prugh Funeral Service. The memorial service for Don Gillis will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Prugh’s Chapel, Burlington, Iowa. Chaplain David Huskey will officiate. Interment of ashes will be at a later date. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Following the memorial service, a light luncheon will be held at the Steamboat Senior Center.

Earl George Hopkins, 61, of Corydon, formerly of Burlington, died at 6:00 PM Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the Flagstaff Medical Center in Flagstaff, AZ. Arrangements are pending at the Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

 

Richard Bruce ‘Rich’ Bryant, age 64, of Wapello, died Sunday afternoon, July 6, 2014, in a motor vehicle accident on Highway 61 north of Grandview. The son of Walt and Ruth Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Highbarger Bryant, he was born on March 15, 1950 in Burlington. He married Llewann Fletcher on February 10, 1973 in Wapello.

Rich graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1968 and attended the University of Northern Iowa. He was a contractor with Bryant Construction working with his brother Tom.

Rich enjoyed sports, especially the Cardinals and Hawkeyes. His favorite times were spent with his grandsons.

His family includes his wife, Llewann; a daughter, Sarah & Mike Huxley of Wapello; a son, Daniel & Tara Bryant of West Liberty; three grandsons, Kolby and Kaleb Huxley and Caedan Bryant; two sisters, Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Poe of Wapello and Frances & Gene Wilson of Morning Sun; four brothers, John & Judy Bryant of Cedar Rapids, Jim Bryant of Winfield, Mike & Shelly Bryant of Granger, Indiana, and Tom & Sue Bryant of Morning Sun; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Timothy.

The funeral ceremony for Rich Bryant will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, conducted by Kyle Soukup with memories by Mike Huxley. Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun. Friends and family will gather after the committal at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Wapello.

Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello Youth League and the Keck Memorial Library in Wapello.
