Accused Shooter Polhans to be Tried for 1st Degree Murder

Des Moines County Attorney Amy Beavers says she personally will prosecute a Ft. Madison man for First Degree Murder, for allegedly shooting a Burlington man in the chest June 1st at 16-09 Green Street.

42-year old Lenard “Ray” Polhans (of 1309 23rd Street) was arrested that same day and has remained in the Des Moines County jail since, unable to post a half-million-dollar bond…but a formal charge wasn’t filed until yesterday(Tues), the deadline for doing so. The victim, 35-year old Marvin Sutton of the Green Street address, was found in his backyard, a hammer he had apparently hit Polhans with, clutched in one hand. Polhans will be arraigned on the murder charge next Monday morning.

Anyone with additional information about the killing is asked to call Burlington Police or Crimestoppers. You don’t have to give your name and you could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to a conviction.
