Mary Elizabeth Barngrover, 89, of West Burlington, died at  Thursday, July 17, 2014, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born January 29, 1925, in Winfield, IA, she was the daughter of Merle F. and Dorothy Opal McCandless Heldt.

Survivors include son, Terry (Roberta) Barngrover of Burlington; one daughter, Virginia Thompson of Albuquerque, NM; three grandchildren, Jason (Renee) Barngrover of Des Moines, Ryan (Stephanie) Barngrover of Burlington, and Wendee Thompson of Albuquerque, NM; and two great-grandchildren, Miya Barngrover and Mason Barngrover both of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Marilyn  Kay Vojcihoski, 66, of Yarmouth, died at 9:00 PM Thursday, July 17, 2014, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born November 23, 1947, in Ottumwa, she was the daughter of Marion and Esther Orman Carruthers. On April 28, 1987, she married Larry Vojcihoski in Austin, TX.

For most of her life, she worked as a cook and managed various restaurants.  She loved animals and cooking.  She also enjoyed researching genealogy.  Marilyn was a very loving and compassionate wife, mother, sister and friend.

Survivors include husband, Larry Vojcihoski of Yarmouth;  two sons, Larry (Theresa) Hulen Jr. of Salem and Eugene (Bibiana) Cooksey of Austin, TX; five grandchildren; one sister, Linda Kent of Austin, TX; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Sandra Carruthers; and one brother, Donald H. Orman.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.There will be no visitation or services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Des Moines County Humane Society and St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.

Ralph L. Todd, 92, of Burlington, died at 8:20 PM Thursday, July 17, 2014, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 14, 1922, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Milford and Margaret Cummings Todd. On August 17, 1946, he married Doris I. Boyer in Burlington.

Ralph was a farmer and worked in agriculture offices and sales, farm services, and an oil refinery in Texas.

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving during the World War II from 1942 until 1945.

He was a first Lieutenant  with the Army Air Corp flying B24’s during WWII out of Italy.

Survivors include wife, Doris of Burlington; two sons, Nick Todd of Burlington, and Randall Todd, of Strongsville, Ohio; two brothers, Donald Todd of Boulder, CO and Harold “Charlie” Todd of Morning Sun; three sisters, Dorothy Baker of Sperry, Mary Beth Johnson of Madison, WI, and Shirley Nott of North Liberty and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Bruce Todd and one sister, Marilyn Bozman.

Visitation will be from noon until 5:00 PM Sunday, July 20, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home.  There will be no family visitation.

The funeral service for Mr. Todd will be 1:00 PM Monday, July 21, 2014, at First United Presbyterian Church of Mediapolis with Reverend Debra L. Kinney officiating.  Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun with full military honors rendered by the Morning Sun American Legion.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the church following the burial.

A memorial has been established for First United Presbyterian Church of Mediapolis.

Survivors: include her husband, Shaun Frantz of Burlington; three sons, Hunter Hume of Edgerton, Kansas and Brendan and Trevor Frantz at home; her parents Michael and Johnetta Hume of Edgerton, Kansas.

Funeral Service:  will be held in Prugh’s Chapel Wednesday, July 23, 2004 at 4:00 p.m.   Pastor Bill Willis will officiate.     Interment will be at a later date.

Other arrangements:  Friends may call at Prugh’s after 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday.   The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A memorial has been established for her children’s education.Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.

 

Catina Renea Frantz, 40, died Thursday, July 17, 2014 at her home in Burlington, Iowa.  She was born October 2, 1973 in Missouri the daughter of Michael and Johnetta Hume.  On January 16, 2004 she married Shaun Nicholas Frantz in Olathe, Kansas.

Catina was a former Correctional Officer at ISP.  She loved music, her boys, dreaming of travel and trips with her family.  She enjoyed reading, driving motorcycles, movies and could sit still and read all day if time permitted.  She was of the Protestant Faith.

Survivors include her husband, Shaun Frantz of Burlington, Three sons, Hunter Hume of Edgerton, Kansas and Brendan and Trevor Frantz at home.  Her parents Michael and Johnetta Hume of Edgerton, Kansas.  She was preceded in death by her grandmother.

Funeral Services will be held in Prugh’s Chapel Wednesday, July 23, 2004 at 4:00 p.m.  Pastor Bill Willis will officiate.   Interment will be at a later date.

Chong Cha Mathias, 70, of West Burlington, Iowa died July 18, 2014 at Ft. Madison Hospital, Ft. Madison, Iowa as the result of a tragic accident.  She was born in Seoul, Korea November 3, 1943 the daughter of Bong and Kim Yong Lee.  She married Joseph Vernon Mathias in 1967 in Seoul, Korea. He died in Vietnam in September 1969.  She came to the United States in August 1969.

Chong was the retired Bar Manager of The Townhouse Bar and Restaurant in downtown Burlington for 35 years. She was a loving, nurturing and wonderful mother and grandmother and a wonderful sister.  She was an excellent cook and enjoyed gardening.  Chong was very witty and could make you laugh and she was the hardest working woman in the world.  Chong was a master gardener and her yard was always perfect.

Survivors include long time companion and love of her life, Patrick Mewes of West Burlington, one daughter, Susan (John) Malufka of Calumet City, Illinois. One son Richard Mathias. One sister, Jung Nam Lee of Burlington whom she loved dearly, two grandsons, Rochne and Loudden Mathias of Burlington, two granddaughters, Halia Mathias of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and Jaydne Jo Mead of Davenport, Iowa.  Two brother in laws, Michael Mathias of Pennsylvania and Terry (Jan) Mathias of Colona, Illinois. Two sister in laws, Tamera Mathias of Pontiac, MI. and Corrine Mathias of California.  Four nieces, Jamie, Christy, Casio, and Ariel.  One nephew, Michael.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, three sisters, loving in laws, Jack and Bernadine Mathias and long time friend, Connie Moorman.

Funeral Services will be held in Prugh’s Chapel Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 12:00 noon. Chaplain Randy Gearhart will officiate.  The family will receive friends at Prugh’s on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.  Friends and family will gather at her home in West Burlington after the funeral service for a time of food and fellowship.

Following the service cremation will entrusted to the loving care of Prugh Funeral Service.  Private interment of the ashes will be in Longcreek Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Starr’s Cave Nature Center.
