Edwin Earl Minard, 88, of Burlington, died Monday, July 21, 2014, at his home in Burlington, Iowa.

Born on June 19, 1926, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the youngest child of Edward C. Minard and Hazel Anna Agnes Sattler. He married Charlotte “Gwen” Pettigrew on October 23, 1950, in Corinth, Mississippi. Gwen passed away January 8, 2011.

Edwin “Ed” graduated from Burlington High School in 1944. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, September 21, 1943 and entered active service December 11, 1944 after graduation from High School. He was trained as a B-29 Tail-Gunner in Ft. Meyers, Florida. He served in the occupation of Japan at Base No. 2, 5th Fighter Command, Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan for 10 months upon the end of WWII. He was honorably discharged November 25, 1946. Decorations and Citations included: American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), and Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon.

Ed attended Burlington Junior College after the war and played on the school football team that had a bid for the “Little Rose Bowl.” He was a Boiler Maker for Hawk Eye Boiler Company in Burlington for many years and became the operator/owner upon his father’s death. He also was partner with Max Moore at Otter Plastics in Mediapolis, Iowa, where they made and shipped duck decoys all over North America. He was a commercial fisherman for several years and enjoyed duck hunting and fishing with family and friends. In the past three years, he has volunteered each Wednesday at the Iowa Welcome Center and has written poetry with two of his poems being published.

He is survived by one son, Edwin E. “Ed” (Pat) Minard II of Burlington, Iowa; and one daughter, Kellie Gwen (Scott) Minard Morgan of Frankfort, Kentucky; Eleven grandchildren–Jennifer (Ben) Wilson, Chris (Shayla) Minard, Trisha (Luke) Russell, Andrew (Jenny) Minard, John (Laura) Minard, Elizabeth (A.J.) Allard, Joshua Minard, Eryn (Matt) Looney, Scott (Brittany) Morgan, Sarah Morgan and Adam (Jessica) Morgan. He had 18 great-grandchildren–Cody & Autumn Wilson, Peyton & William Minard, Ava, Ella, Mya, Owen & Henry Russell, Lincoln & Griffin Minard, Cate & Jase Looney, Jacob Kinman & Lucas Morgan, Cole Morgan, baby “L” and several nieces and nephews in the western United States.

Gwen his wife, Edward his brother, Edna Edwards and June Bryant, his two sisters, preceded him in death.

A Memorial Service for Edwin E. Minard will be held on Friday, August 1, 2014, 10:30 a.m., at Prugh Chapel, Burlington, Iowa. Ed’s son will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. In keeping with Ed’s request, his body has been cremated. A memorial has been established in his name. Bryson John Sparrow, son of Seth and Ashley Axness Sparrow was stillborn Friday, July 25, 2014 at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, IA.

He is survived by his parents of LaHarpe, IL, grandparents, John and Pam Sparrow of LaHarpe, Mike and Dori Axness of Carpio, ND, great-grandparents, James Sparrow of LaHarpe, Patty Stinson of Andover, IL, and Angie Guvakosky of Minot, ND, and his great-great-grandfather Merritt Goddard of Rock Island, IL, along with two aunts and three uncles.

A private family service will be held at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, IL with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Nathan Carl Six, 52, of Wever, died at 8:58 PM Saturday, July 26, 2014, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

 

Born February 16, 1962, he was the son of Thomas and Shirley Schatz Six. On April 6, 1999, he married Patricia “Trish” Denney. She preceded him in death.

 

Nathan worked as a truck driver for Star Line Trucking and later owned his own company called Six Pack Trucking.

 

He was a great cook, wood worker, and mechanic.

 

Survivors include two brothers, Tom (Anna) Six of Steele, ND and Leonard Six of TX; one sister, Carol (Pat) Six-Kinaman of Fort Madison, IA; and nine nephews and three nieces.

 

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, DeAnna Hart; and one brother, Oscar Six.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.

 

Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Thielen Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends.

 

The memorial service for Mr. Six will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery in Underwood, ND at a later date.

 

A memorial has been established.

Jeffrey Wyatt Peterson Sr., age 58 of Stronghurst, Illinois, died at 4:46 a.m. Monday July 28, 2014 at his home. He was born December 8, 1955 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Gear “Skeeter” and Lorraine Johnson Peterson. On August 8, 1981, he married Debra Countryman in Stronghurst.

 

Jeff was a graduate of Stronghurst High School. He had worked as an automobile mechanic for Davison Motor Sales in Stronghurst for many years, and later owned and operated Peterson’s Garage in Stronghurst for several years. He was an avid gun enthusiast, and loved to hunt, do carpentry, and woodworking. He was a quiet and proud man, who dearly loved his family. He was a member of the Stronghurst Christian Church.

 

Survivors include his wife, his mother of Stronghurst, two daughters, Leslie Peterson of Burlington, Allison Peterson of Stronghurst, one son, Jeffrey W. (Holly Gullberg) Peterson Jr. of Stronghurst, six grandchildren, Autumn, Zander Wyatt, and Raden Meyer, Jeffrey W. Peterson III, Zella Anne Peterson, and Lexis Waddell, one sister, Karen (Rod) Nichols of Stronghurst, three brothers, Kenneth (Rhonda) Peterson of Biggsville, IL, Quentin (Kris) Peterson and Pat (Janet) Peterson, both of Stronghurst. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, David Peterson.

 

Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Thursday July 31, 2014 followed by a funeral service at 4:00 p.m. at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. Rev. Steve Minkler will officiate. Joyce Lee Bozarth, 77, of Wapello, died Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Muscatine Hospital.

The funeral service for Joyce Bozarth will be at 2:00 PM, Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Elliott Chapel, New London. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, rural Mt. Union. There will be no visitation. A memorial has been established to the Wapello Nursing and Rehab Center.

 

Gladys Mae Williams, 81, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Klein Center, West Burlington, Iowa on Thursday evening, July 24, 2014.

Born on September 16, 1932 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Charles and Dorothy L. Struck Dilsaver. She married Ray Albert Williams on October 25, 1954 in Burlington, Iowa. He died on February 26, 2012.

Gladys worked at Midwest Biscuit for 32 years. She enjoyed crocheting, putting puzzles together, passing out candy at Halloween, spending time with the family during holidays and attending social events at work. She walked daily at Westland Mall and enjoyed collecting M & M Candy Collectibles. She was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary (William) Roach of Topeka, Kansas and Penny (Raymond) Smith of West Burlington, Iowa; one son, Dennis Williams of San Diego, California; three grandchildren Whitney, Gavin and Danielle; one great-granddaughter, Kayla; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three sisters, Joyce, Virginia and Charlotte; two brothers, Kenneth and Arthur.

Funeral services for Gladys Williams will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Prugh’s Chapel, Burlington, Iowa. Rev. Tyrone Henderson will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. in Prugh’s Chapel. A memorial has been established for the Burlington Public Library. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.
