Douglas Max Ellis, 58, of Burlington, died at 12:50 AM Friday, August 1, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City .

 

Born May 20, 1956, in Burlington, he was the son of Dale and Betty Jean Baker Ellis Feldman.

 

Doug graduated from Burlington High School. He worked at Burlington Speed Print and Craftsman Press. He later cooked for many establishments in the area including the Salvation Army and Iowa Tavern.

 

He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #579 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10102. He enjoyed his dogs, Rusty and Madison, building model ships, chess and playing the guitar.

 

Survivors include his wife, Martha White of Burlington, one son, Eric (Crista) White of Templeton, IA; one granddaughter, Lily White; his mother, Betty Ellis Feldman of Burlington; one brother, David Ellis of Burlington; two sisters, Michelle Ellis of Burlington, and Melissa (Jim) Kammerer of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother Dale Michael Ellis, his grandparents Elmer and Hazel Baker, and Harry and Beulah Ellis.

 

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Ellis will be 10:00 AM Thursday, August 7, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend David J. Yonker officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) following the burial.

 

A memorial has been established.

Jerry L. Nelson, 75, of Burlington, died at 3:50 AM Friday, August 1, 2014, at his home.

 

Born August 15, 1938, in New London, he was the son of Linden “Pug” and Mary Carper Nelson. On February 18, 1966, he married Jackie Anne Mauer in Biggsville, IL.

 

Jerry was a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1996 after 33 years. If you were lucky enough to have him as your mail carrier, chances are he remembers your address.

 

He was a 1955 graduate of New London High School.

 

He served in the Army Reserves and Iowa National Guard during Desert Storm. After leading an award winning Mess Section, Jerry retired in 1998 after 26 years with the rank, Sergeant First Class.

 

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie 150. He enjoyed fishing with his friends and grandson. Jerry was always quick-witted and never without a story to tell.

 

Survivors include his wife, Jackie, two daughters, Stacey (Mike) Meyer of Burlington, and Lynnie (Scott) Krogmeier of Burlington; two grandchildren, Blake Nelson and Kennedy Krogmeier; two great-grandsons, Noah Nelson, and Hunter Smith-Nelson; one sister, Linda (Gary) Austin of Mesquite, TX, and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Larry and Michael.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.

 

The family will receive friends from noon until 2:00 PM Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Thielen Funeral Home with full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard at 2:00 PM.

 

A Celebration of Life will immediately follow military honors at the Burlington Eagles Club Aerie 150.

 

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for his granddaughter’s college fund.
