Mrs. Garnet Coberley, 88, of Morning Sun and New London, died Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at Sunrise Terrace in Winfield. Services are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

 

Eddie Cooper Martin, 50, died Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa. He was born April 27, 1964 in Osceola, Arkansas, the son of James and Lydia Bell Martin. On February 18, 1991 he married Christina Elaine Cantu in Burlington; she died July 1, 1994. On December 15, 2001 he married Arlene Christel Roberson in Burlington, Iowa.
Eddie was a dishwasher at Applebee’s Restaurant in Burlington. He enjoyed watching TV, sports, music, dancing and he loved helping people.
He is survived by his wife Arlene of Burlington, his mother Lydia Lewis of Burlington and his father James Martin of Memphis, TN; four sisters,Tansha Gordon and Falana (James) Watts both of Burlington, Elaine Neal of Cedar Rapids, IA and Charlotta Coleman of Mitchellville, IA; eight brothers, James (Theresa) Martin of Luxora, Arkansas, Ricky (Stephanie) Martin, Frederico Howard and Kurstan Davenport, all of Burlington, Ronald (Stella) Martin of Rollie, NC; LeRoy (Lakisha) Coleman of Silvis, IL, Rashad Brooks of Davenport, IA and L.C. Davenport of Ft. Madison, IA; a number of nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Christina Elaine Cantu Martin, one brother Eric Coleman and his grandparents.
Funeral Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. Pastor Fred Starling will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends in Prugh’s Chapel on Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A memorial has been established in his memory.

 

Lewis Edward Ray, 68, of Ft. Madison, Iowa, died at his home on Friday, August 8, 2014.

Born on November 12, 1945 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Monroe “Frank” and Lucille E. Anderson Ray. He married and later divorced.

Lewis was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal-4th Award, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Overseas Service Bars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He worked construction at Raider’s Precast Concrete. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, old western movies and his three cats. He was of the Christian faith.

He is survived by his step-daughter, Tracie (Troy) Currie of Des Moines, Iowa; one brother, John Franklin Ray of Galesburg, Ill.; one sister, Dorothy Reyes of Burlington, Iowa; one step-sister, Brenda Bates of Burlington, Iowa; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Bertha A. Humphrey Ray; one brother, Joseph Phillip Ray; three sisters, Helen Berry, Pearl Cratton and Mary Ann Wells; one step-sister, Lovetia Leatherwood.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 18, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Prugh’s Chapel. Rev. Shane McCampbell will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be in Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, Iowa.
