Obituaries Thursday August 21st

Betty Bernice Simmons Ball, 88, of New London, died Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Henry County Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Elliott Chapel, New London. Pastor Brian Swafford will officiate. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery, New London. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Memorials have been established to the New London Rescue Unit and Burge Cemetery Association.

 

William Linden ‘Lindy’ Stone, age 86, of Sperry, died Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. The son of William J. and Jennie Lenn Tucker Stone, he was born on September 21, 1927 in New Hope, Missouri. He married Eunice Katherine Jackson on November 29, 1958 at the bride’s home in Dodgeville.

Lindy attended high school in Missouri and worked in the oil fields of Wyoming before coming to Iowa in 1954. He farmed and did custom combining and was a truck driver and did carpentry work. He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 579 and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and SCC Blackhawks basketball fan. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren play sports, camping at 7-ponds, playing cards, and eating ice cream.

His family includes his wife, Eunice; three daughters, Patti & Joe Wischmeier of Burlington, Becky & Tim Mellinger of Sperry, and Terri & Kevin Johnson of Yarmouth; two sons, Bill & Sue Stone of Burlington and Kenny & Michelle Stone of Wapello; six grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his special best friend, Rocky. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and four brothers.

He will be cremated. The funeral ceremony will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, August 23, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Sperry, with Rev Jeff Kodis officiating. Burial will follow at the Old Stone Cemetery, rural Sperry. Friends may call to sign the book from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday at the Sperry United Methodist Church where the family will meet friends from 2:00 to 3:00 PM on Saturday prior to the funeral. A gathering and meal will follow at the church Fellowship Hall after the committal service.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Great River Hospice and the Old Stone Cemetery Association.
