FM Officer-Involved Fatal Shooting Probe Turned Over to A-G’s Office

The Iowa DCI’s investigation into the August 3rd fatal shooting of a Ft. Madison man by a local police officer has been turned over to the state Attorney General’s office for review.

Authorities say they were chasing 27-year old Ryan Swearingen as a suspect in a tire-slashing, when he ducked into the house at 15-27 Avenue E. When officer Karl Judd arrived to search for him, Swearingen allegedly came out of a closet holding a knife and Judd shot him.

He was pronounced dead at Ft. Madison Community Hospital and an autopsy determined that he was killed by multiple bullet wounds. Judd was put on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
