Loebsack: Federal Grant Assured for Leopold Recreation Area

The money’s not in-hand yet, but Des Moines County Conservation Department Director Chris Lee says he’s been assured by local Congressman Dave Loebsack that the County is getting a $150,000 federal grant to purchase 235 acres of land just north of Burlington.

Conservation Director Chris Lee says the government’s wheels turn slowly, but he hopes to close on the land in time for the fall hunting seasons…hunting being just one of many uses the property will have.   It also includes land needed for a stretch of the Flint River Trail, and Lee says the levee along Flint Creek will eventually come down, so when the creek floods, it’ll take its natural path as part of a flood-plain.

The property will be called the Leopold Recreation Area, named for famed conservationist and Burlington native Aldo Leopold.
