Carolyn Elsie Dalton, 72, of Oelwein, Iowa, died at Mercy Hospital, Oelwein, Iowa, on Tuesday, September 23, 2014.

Born on July 18, 1942 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of William H. and Eleanor E. Fahlgren Groeltz. She married and later divorced.

She enjoyed sewing, arts and crafts, cooking, Iowa football and spending time with family and friends. She was of the Lutheran faith.

She is survived by two sons, Tim (Patsy) Dalton of Suwanee, Georgia, and Ron (Gloria) Dalton of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; one brother, William Groeltz; one sister, Barbara (Rob) Kinneer; four grandchildren, Wyatt, Bridget Lindsey and Heather Dalton; her best friend for 30 years Marilyn Root, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son Matthew James Dalton, and her parents.

The memorial service for Carolyn Dalton will be held on Friday, September 26, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at Prugh’s Chapel. Pastor Rick Biedermann will officiate. Interment will be at a later date.

Helen F. Schwartz, 91, former Burlington resident, died at Windsor Manor, Carol Stream, Illinois, on Tuesday, September 23, 2014.

Born April 8, 1923 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Herbert F. and Vala G. Chambers Schwartz.

Miss Schwartz worked as stewardess on the California Zephyr for seven years and taught school for 17 years at North Hill School. She was a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlington. She was a life-long fan of the Chicago Cubs and enjoyed sports and reading. She was a member of the Iowa State Education Association, National Education Association, Burlington Education Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Survivors include her sister, Virginia S. McCartney of Carol Stream, Illinois; two nieces, Molly (Larry) Klowden of Elmhurst, Illinois and Jane (Cletus) Coughlin of Chesterfield, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Hugh McCartney.

The private graveside committal service for Miss Schwartz will be held at Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington. Pastor Ryan Cosgrove will officiate. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.

 

Michael Julius Cline, 70, of Burlington, died at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa, on Tuesday, September 23, 2014.

Born on December 12, 1943 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Samuel and Frances Walberg Cline. He married Cheryl Ann Breuer on March 5, 1979 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Michael was an iron worker for J & J Steel and was a member of Union Local 577. He enjoyed spending time on the Mississippi river, hunting, fishing, racing cars at 34 Raceway and watching NASCAR. He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; one son, Michael Cline of Burlington, Iowa; two daughters, Michelle (Travis) Vancil of Gladstone, Illinois and Carrie (Jake Woods) Cline of LaHarpe, Illinois; one step-daughter, Wendy (Marion) Howe of Burlington, Iowa; two sisters, Barbara (Stan) Schnicker of Mediapolis, Iowa and Judy (Jerry) Best of Iowa City, Iowa; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four step- great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral service for Michael Cline will be held on Monday, September 29, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Prugh’s Chapel. Chaplain Randy Gearhart will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A memorial has been established for St. John United Church of Christ Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Prugh’s Chapel. Cremation and interment of ashes will be accorded at a later date. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.

 

Judith Elaine Crabb, 73, of Burlington, died at 4:30 AM Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at the Danville Care Center in Danville.

Born September 23, 1941, in Minneapolis, MN, she was the daughter of William Paul and Jilder Granroth Beriou. On July 29, 1961, she married Terry W. Crabb in Burlington.

Judy was a part of the first graduating class from Burlington Notre Dame High School in 1958. She worked in outside sales at the Winegard Company.

She was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington. She enjoyed bowling and reading.

Survivors include husband, Terry; one son, Todd Crabb of Clinton; two daughters, Wendy (Ed) Miranda of Des Moines and Kelly (Terry) Wills of West Burlington; seven grandchildren, Andrea, Terry, Tyler, Samantha, Jacy, Stephanie, and Travis; one brother, William (Connie) Beriou of Burlington; two sisters, Janet Shoemaker of Livonia, MI and Jacqueline (Jerry) Crable of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:00 PM Rosary Service until 7:00 PM Friday, September 26, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Crabb will be 1:00 PM Sat urday, September 27, 2014, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Rev. Father David G. Steinle as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to Des Moines County Humane Society.

Letha Irene St Clair, 92 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 12:30 am Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at The Madison, Fort Madison, Iowa. She was born April 21, 1922 at Kirksville, Missouri, a daughter of Raymond A. and Rebecca M. (Bell) Kellison. On June 29, 1939, she married Russell L.
St Clair at Macon, Missouri.

She lived most of her life in Fort Madison, where she worked for Sheaffer Pen for many years. She was a past member of King’s Daughters and Ladies Auxiliary: Brotherhood Railroad Trainmen. She was a former member of the Santa Fe United Methodist Church and now member of the Fort Madison United Methodist Church. She loved to crochet, quilt, garden, sew and ballroom and swing dancing.

She is survived by three daughters: Evelyn “Lorraine” (husband Jimmie) Orr, of Clive, Iowa; Judith “Elaine” Worthman, of Urbandale, Iowa; Sandy Schafer, of Fort Madison, Iowa; one brother, Laverne (wife Donna) Kellison, of San Jacito, California; three sisters: Lucille Collop, of Kirksville, Missouri; Mary Jane Hopewell, of Papillion, Nebraska; Wilma (husband Don) Stewart, of Hampton, Illinois; three sister-in-laws: Darlene Kellison, of Missouri; Evelyn Kellison, of Kirksville, Missouri; Beth Kellison, of Lawrence, Kansas; one brother-in-law, Marvin Collop, of Leesburg, Florida; 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers, two sisters and one grandson.

Her family will greet friends from 11:30 – 1:00 pm Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, September 27, 2014 the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, with Pastor Jim Scott officiating. Burial will be held at the Fairview Cemetery. Roxane “Rocky” Calvert-Pihl, 52 years, of Donnellson, Iowa died Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at her home. She was born August 18, 1962 at Keokuk, Iowa, a daughter of Ronald R. and Virginia E. (Hocker) Calvert. She married Steve Pihl, they had three children: Naomi, Brandy, and Joshua.

She lived most of her life in the area and was a 1980 graduate of Central Lee High School. She was a homemaker and worked outside the home as a caregiver to many. She loved yard sales and treasure hunting for Betty Boop, cookie cutters, apples, and classic cartoon characters. Most of all, she loved being with her family.

She is survived by her mother, Virginia Calvert, of Donnellson, Iowa; one son, Joshua (Amy) Pihl, of Keokuk, Iowa; two daughters, Naomi Wheatley, of Indianola, Iowa and Brandy Pihl, of Cleveland, TN; one brother, Rodney (Susan) Calvert, of Donnellson, Iowa; one sister, Rhonda (Brett) Longenecker, of Keokuk, Iowa; two grandchildren, Chloe and William, and one on the way, Isabella Anne; aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and father, Ronald Calvert.

Her body has been cremated. Her family will greet friends from 3:00 – 5:00 pm Sunday, September 28, 2014 at the Barr Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am Monday, September 29, 2014 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Bill Willis, officiating. Burial will be at Argyle Memorial Gardens, Argyle, Iowa.
