Riverfront Flood-Prevention Study to be Done if Council Says Yes

The Burlington City Council meets in special session today(Mon) at 4:30 and will be asked to hire a West Des Moines company…Veenstra and Kimm…to do a quick-but-comprehensive flood mitigation study of the downtown riverfront.

If the contract is approved, the City will pay the firm up to $128,777…but the study must be done by December 1st. The City’s applying for some state flood-prevention money…based on this year’s sales tax revenue…and they’re trying to get the paperwork done a-s-a-p so they can get the available funds before they go to other cities.

Also at this(Mon) afternoon’s special meeting, the council will be asked to hire an outside contractor to fix the growing sinkhole near the corner of Main & Valley…and another firm to repair the City Hall roof and garage.

The every-other-week work session will follow the special meeting and on the discussion portion of the agenda are presentations by the Convention & Visitors Bureau…the Alternative Energy Committee…the Treasurer…and the PRIDE Team. Members will also talk about the citywide cleanup…and the replacement of Councilwoman Becky Shockley, who recently resigned.
