Obituaries Wednesday October 1st

Ivan L. Martin, 71 of Raritan, Illinois died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday September 30, 2014 at Roseville Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Roseville, Illinois. He was born June 16, 1943 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Floyd and Alice Benson Martin. On July 25, 1963, he married Linda K. Hawk in Bushnell, Illinois.

Mr. Martin was a farm worker all of his life and also was a semi driver for Stronghurst Grain & Merchandise for many years. He was a member of the Stronghurst Lions Club and the Henderson County Olde Tymers.
Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Iva Kay (Kevin) Horner of Brush, Colorado, one son, Ron (Beth) Martin of Brandon, Mississippi, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one sister, Bonnie Woodruff of West Branch, Iowa, and three brothers, Leon and Merrill Martin, both of Monmouth, Illinois, and his twin, Alvin Martin of Macomb, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Mark Martin and one daughter, Lori Furman.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday October 3rd at Asbury Cemetery, near Roseville with Rev. Richard Johnson officiating. Michael Dean Grouwinkel, age 44, of Cape Coral, Florida and formerly of Wapello, died Sunday, September 28, 2014, at his home. The son of Kenneth Dean and Edith ‘Edie’ Nehring Grouwinkel, he was born on June 10, 1970 in Washington, Iowa.

Michael graduated from Wapello High School in 1988. He served in the US Army from 1989 to 1993 twice being in Saudi Arabia. Michael also served with the Iowa National Guard in Clinton for several years. He worked at Grimm Bros. Plastics in Wapello for about 10 years and moved to Florida and has worked as a Direct TV installer.

He enjoyed bowling and golfing and was a fan of the Buffalo Bills and the Hawkeyes.

Michael is survived by his mother, Edie Grouwinkel of Wapello; his brother Kenneth & Brenda Grouwinkel of Muscatine; a niece Kassandra; and a nephew, Devin. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 4, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Wapello with Rev. Pam Kranzler officiating. Military rites will follow provided by the Wapello VFW Glenn Allen Post 5166. A lunch fellowship will then follow at the Fellowship Hall of the church.

The family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.

A Memorial Fund has been established.

George Howard Houlton, 85, of Danville, formerly of Macomb, IL, died at 12:03 AM Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born April 11, 1929, in Bardolph, IL, he was the son of Charles Frank and Lucille Allard Houlton. On April 19, 1953, he married Nina Delores Poland in Roseville, IL. She died May 26, 2006.

George worked as a machinist for NTN Bower Rollerbearing company in Macomb for 25 years retiring in 1992.

He graduated from Western Academy in Macomb, IL. He served in the U.S. Army with the 16th Infantry Division stationed in Germany during World War II.

He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk.

Survivors include one son, George (Kathy) Houlton of Burlington; one granddaughter, Jessica (Matt) Moore of Des Moines; two great-granddaughters, Karrigan Moore and Sinclaire Moore; two brothers, Fred (Virginia) Houlton of Rock Island, IL and Louis Anders of Orangeville, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, and he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday, October 6, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends.

The memorial service for Mr. Houlton will be 11:00 AM Monday, October 6, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Simeon Counterman officiating and full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the service. Burial will be in Roseville Township Cemetery Roseville, IL at a later date.

Memorials have been established to Calvary Baptist Church, Great River Hospice and Des Moines County Animal Shelter.
