The family of a Brighton man fatally shot by a Van Buren County Sheriff’s deputy about two years ago, is suing deputy Jon Tharp for wrongful death.
A story in today’s(Fri) Hawk Eye…a local newspaper…says the deputy shot 59-year old Michael Dooley in the head, as Dooley was complying with an order to drop his rifle, which turned out to be a replica BB gun. Iowa’s Division of Criminal Investigation cleared Tharp of wrongdoing in the death, saying he acted in defense of himself and others, and performed within the scope of his employment as a deputy.
