Roland Lee Wiemann, 81, of Burlington, died Monday, October 13, 2014, in Burlington.

Born April 30, 1933, at his parent’s farm house on Cliff Road in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Arnold Henry Sr. and Carrie Cecelia Riepe Wiemann. On October 25, 1952, he married Janet Elaine Kapotas in Burlington, Iowa.

He was a 1952 graduate of Burlington High School where he was a member of the track relay team during his senior year.

For many years Roland worked as a farmhand or had his own operations. On May 19, 1960, he concluded his four year apprenticeship as a Journeyman’s Machinist with Blaw-Knox Company in East Chicago. His credentials included training in lathe, drill press, shaper, mill, power hacksaw, grinder, bench work, welding, and mechanical drafting. During this time, he was supporting his family that grew to four children and farming near Hebron, Indiana.

In 1964, after moving back to Iowa and working as a farmhand for several years, he joined Case Company, working in the Tool and Die Shop for 15 years. Later he moved to the Experimental Department, where engineering prototypes were built. He retired from case in the spring of 1994 and continued his main hobby and love – farming. For a year, he filled a Journeyman’s instructor position to overlook the work of younger apprentices, sharing the years of knowledge he had gained.

He was a member of Community of Christ Church. He served on the Des Moines Iowa State Extension Council as President during the late 1960’s and 1970’s. He also served on the Des Moines County Farm Bureau Board for a number of years and mowed for the church and Farm Bureau for many years. One of Roland’s passions was to participate in annual antique tractor rides, his last one being in 2013. He also loved going to auctions and talking with farmers. His happiest memories were when his children were born, living on his current acreage, and spending time with the family horse, “Sam”, when he was a child.
