Mt. Union Area Residents Plead with DMCo Supervisors Again for Help

The Des Moines County Board heard again yesterday(Tues) from Jean Lappe, who lives with her husband between Morning Sun and Mount Union and continues to worry about the rapidly growing number of large-scale confined hog farms in the Des Moines-Louisa-Henry and Jefferson County area.

Lappe says no one at the state or local level has been willing to help.

Des Moines County Board Chairman Bob Beck…a pig farmer himself in the Danville area…says there’s nothing the Supervisors can do…but those opposed to the so-called “factory” hog farms have two viable alternatives — lobby local lawmakers to change state code and petition the counties for zoning laws. There is a third alternative…one the Jefferson County Farmers & Neighbors are in the process of doing — filing a lawsuit.
