Changes Coming Fast in Wake of BCSD Suspension Snafu: Coen

The Burlington School District will make some changes…and quickly…in the wake of a recent incident in which an Aldo Leopold Middle School student was given an hour-long in-school detention…and then forgotten by the Principal, who went home without releasing her.

Supt. Pat Coen says the incident was unfortunate, but also shed light on needed changes in the District’s whole philosophy — primarily that detentions should not be punitive.

Coen says there’ll also be some physical changes made to the rooms themselves, such as no blinds or shades.

Coen also alerted parents to the cell-phone “app” called Yik-Yak, which allows its users to post things on social media sites totally anonymously.
