Two Former Mayors Agree to Agree on Most Issues; Will Join Us Monday

The two surviving candidates for an open seat on the Burlington City Council went head-to-head last(Thur) night on cable and radio from City Hall, but most of their views didn’t seem all that different.

Former Mayors Jim Davidson and John Sandell did disagree on at least one long-standing issue — the future of Cascade Bridge. Sandell doesn’t think it should be repaired or replaced, while Davidson feels it should be replaced, but not until the money’s available.

On the subject of public safety budgets, both men say the police and fire departments should have more money, but not until the City’s debt is further reduced.   On the proposed flood mitigation plan, both seem to favor most of the recommendations made by two consulting companies Burlington has hired. Sandell is concerned that the area between Memorial Auditorium and the Port-of-Burlington will be changed too much.   On the topic of having a public swimming pool, Davidson and Sandell both said it’s not an essential service.

Monday, the two men will join us on the “The Talk Show,” at 10 am.   Early voting is going on now and election day is December 30th.  The winner will succeed Becky Shockley, who recently resigned from the council.
