Obituaries Tuesday December 30th

Angela Marie Lopez died Friday, December 26, 2014 at her home in Burlington.  She was born June 24, 1968 in Fort Madison, Iowa the daughter of Joseph A. and Sandra K. Albright Lopez Sr.

She was a homemaker.  Angela enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, watching Nascar racing especially Jeff Gordon.  She enjoyed camping and fishing at the Skunk River and the Y Camp.  She was a Harley Davidson Motorcycle enthusiast.   Angela liked to talk with friends on the phone and she loved roses.

She is survived by her mother and step father, Sandra and Louis “Butch” Fisher of Burlington. Her father Joseph A. Lopez Sr.  Three daughters, Amanda Vandel, Amber Sue Vandel and Alicia Nicole (Matt) Siefken all of Burlington.  Three brothers, Joseph Lopez of Heinzville, Georgia, Jeff (Brandie)Nelson of Burlington and John Estes of Anamosa, Iowa.  Nine grandchildren, Brennan, Rachel, DaShawn, Justine, Sophia, Lydia, Kaylee, Hallie and Jalen.

Angela was preceded in death by one infant brother, Christopher.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the First Church of the Nazarene.  Pastor Terry Vance will officiate.  The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to the Service.  Following the service a light meal will be served in the Edge at the church.  Following a private family gathering at Prugh’s cremation has been entrusted to our loving care.  A memorial has been established in memory of Angela Lopez.

 

    Fern Elizabeth Breuer died Saturday, December 27, 2014 at her home in Rural Burlington, Iowa. She was born February 14, 1925 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Truie B. and Alvine C. Pfeiff  Johnson.  Fern married Kenneth Edward Breuer June 27, 1942 in West Burlington, Iowa.  He died November 8, 2006.

She was a homemaker and member of St. John’s of Flint River Township Church.  Fern held together a very loving family. She enjoyed crafting and loved gathering crafts and desired to market them someday. Fern also enjoyed cooking, family gatherings and garage sales. She took care of her aunts and uncles in their later years and got together with her brothers and sister once a week to spend time with them. Fern and her husband traveled to her husband’s military service group reunion for many years.

Fern is survived by two sons, James Breuer and Richard (Rikki) Breuer, both of Burlington, Iowa; three daughters, Donna (James) Gerst of Hedrick, Iowa, Cheryl  Cline  of  Burlington, Iowa and Cindy (Jon) Fye of Sperry, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Kathileen Breuer of Mediapolis, Iowa; twenty three grandchildren; twenty six great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Orville Johnson of West Burlington, Iowa; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; one son, Robert Breuer; two brothers, Donald and Truie Johnson; and 1 sister, Della Rheinschmidt.

Funeral Services will be held at St. John of Flint River Township Church on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.  Pastor Dean Graber will officiate. Following the service cremation will be entrusted to the loving care of Prugh Funeral Service. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends in Prugh’s Chapel on Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Memorials have been established for St. John Cemetery and Great River Hospice. Kenneth K. Swan, 79, of Burlington, died at 4:05 AM Monday, December 29, 2014, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

 

Born February 23, 1935, in Montezuma, IA, he was the son of Oscar Orville and Dorothy Mae Long Swan. His brother and he went to Eddyville in 1943 to live with their Uncle M.F. “Happy” Dunwoody on a farm east of Eddyville. On April 21, 1958, he married Laden Laurine Presley in Lancaster, MO.  They were married for 17 years and divorced in 1976.  She died November 26, 2011.  Kenneth spent 33 years with special live together friend Mary Ann Francis Bailey Long.  She died September 21, 2009.

 

He was of the Southern Baptist faith.

 

He attended a small one room country school house called “Plummer School” near Eddyville for his elementary education. He was a 1953 graduate of Eddyville Public High.

Kenny worked as a millright.

 

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Orville Swan of Stronghurst, IL, and Bruce Elliott Swan of Warner Robbins, GA; two daughters, Dorothy Kay Newman and Ollie Eugena Swan, both of Burlington; four step-daughters, Gladys Louise Peavy Cisneros of Carman, IL, Kelly Long of Burlington, Debra Sue Kay of Burlington, and Leanna Dawn Long of Cedar Rapids, IA; several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, three half-sisters, Carol Ellen Kingery of Pella, IA, Constance Sue Klosser of Floris, IA,and Teresa Annette Buck of Burlington;  five half-brother, David Dewayne Swan of Rogers, AK, Robert Kay Swan of Newton, IA, Geofry Guy Swan of Helena, MT, Thomas Torence Swan of Burlington, and Bradley Bryon Swan of Newton, IA, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

 

Besides his wife and special friend he was preceded in death by his parents, foster parent, one brother, Junior Jackson Swan, one half-brother, Steven Sydney Swan, one daughter, Susan Irene Swan, and two loving dogs, Sadie and Sweetheart.

 

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 10:00 AM with the family to receive friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Swan will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating.  Burial will be in Bellefountaine Cemetery in Tracy, IA.

 

A memorial has been established.

 

The graveside inurnment for Mrs. Betty Thomas, 89, of Grinnell, formerly New London, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, rural New London.  Pastor Aimee Goldmeyer will officiate.  A memorial has been established for the Poweshiek County Humane Society.

 

William Charles “Bill the Kid” Newberry, 52, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Burlington Care Center, Burlington, Iowa, on Monday, December 29, 2014.

 

Born on November 23, 1962 in Sedalia, Missouri, he was the son of Jackie and Margaret Price Newberry.

 

“Bill” was a metal recycler and enjoyed working on cars, riding dirt bikes and socializing with friends. He played and collected guitars and was always eager to do a little “jamming” at home with his friends.

 

He is survived by his life partner, Linda Bowers of Burlington, Iowa; three daughters, Margaret Walte of Lomax, Illinois, Caroline Fields of Sioux City, Iowa and Lena Fields of Sioux City, Iowa; two sisters, Jackie Vrandenburg of Keokuk, Iowa and Ruth Mitchel of Texas.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sons, William Newberry Jr., Steven and Dustin Bennett.

Mr. James A. Hobbs, 71, of New London, died Monday, December 29, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.  Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

 

Wesley B. Hawk, 94, died Tue 12/23 at Kindred Hospitals of the Beaches in Rivera, FL.  He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Graveside Funeral Service and Interment will be at 1PM Fri 1/2 in the Aspen Grove Cemetery.  Lunning Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

 

Sharon Lee Wells, 76, Burlington died Wed 12/24 at the Great River Hospice.  Funeral Services will be held at 1030AM Wed 12/31 at Lunning Chapel.  Friends may call Tuesday 12/30 until 5PM and starting at 8AM on Wed with the family present 1 hour prior to the funeral.
