Now THIS is Winter!

Five inches.

That’s how much snow a trained weather spotter says fell southeast of Burlington yesterday(Mon) and overnight. The plows are out…there’s been a snow emergency parking prohibition in effect on Burlington’s snow emergency routes since 6 o’clock last(Mon) night…and city police say a number of tickets have been issued to those who parked along those routes anyway. Those vehicles will be towed if they’re not moved. The parking prohibition does not apply to the city’s central business district, which is bounded by Division Street on the south…Columbia on the north…Front Street on the east…and Central on the west.

Burlington Public Works Director Steve Hoambrecker says the odd-even parking experiment on several stretches of city street has been a success so far.

There have been several reports of vehicles sliding off the road into the ditch and state troopers on both sides of the river advise you to slow down…and if you become stranded, stay with your vehicle. Dress in layers if you have to go outdoors for any reason.

Other snow totals include: from 4.9 to 6 inches around New London…3 1/2 at Roseville and Good Hope…3 inches southwest of Macomb…4.8 near Muscatine…6 inches north of Galva…and 6.3 southeast of Galva. Only an inch fell in Keokuk.
