Obituaries Tuesday January 13th

Joy E. Smith, 85, West Burlington, died on Thursday January 8th at the Great River Medical Center Klein Center.

She is survived by a son, Larry of Burlington and a daughter, Connie Smith of Hendersonville, TN, 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 10AM Wed 1/14 at Lunning Chapel with burial in the Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5-7PM Tue 1/13 at Lunnings.

 

Norval Thomas “Tom” Alderson died Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Blair House, Burlington, Iowa. He was born September 3, 1927 at Polo, Illinois, the son of Louis and Henrietta Hennings Alderson. On September 13, 1973 he married Mary Ann Bock in Burlington, Iowa. She died May 11, 2014.

Tom Served in the U.S. Navy, in WW II. He was a Machinist at Midwest Biscuit Co. and of the Protestant Faith. Tom enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, working in his yard,  mushroom hunting and wood working. Tom’s favorite pastime was watching the birds at the bird feeder. He was a very active and involved and in his later years remained active with the use of his electric scooter. He also enjoyed visiting with his care givers.

Tom is survived by two daughters, Deb (Tom) Gubba of Burlington, Iowa and Patti (Ron) Davidson of Alliance, Ohio; one sister, Jennie Gustison of Wapello, Iowa; one brother, Warren Wilson of New London, Iowa; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, MARY; one son, Mike Alderson; and two brothers, Valdo and Louis Alderson.

Graveside Committal Services will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Chaplain Dean Graber will officiate. Friends are asked to gather at the Sunnyside Ave. entrance to the cemetery Wednesday morning prior to the service.

Friends may call at Prugh’s on Tuesday January 13, from 12:00 noon until 8:00 p.m. A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice Program, West Burlington, Iowa. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.

 

Martha Elaine Oriano, 78, of Burlington, died at 4:30 PM Wednesday, January 7, 2015, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

 

Born October 12, 1936, on a farm west of Ferris, IL, she was the daughter of Albert and Vera Balmer Ammer. On August 20, 1960, she married Richard Oriano in Nauvoo, IL.

 

She taught two years in Peoria, IL and 33 years in the Burlington Community School District, retiring in 1993.

 

Martha was a 1954 graduate of Nauvoo High School. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1958 and a Master’s Degree in Education with emphasis in remedial reading in 1967, both from Western Illinois University.

 

Martha was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, as well as a member of their Sarah Circle. She was also a member of Retired Teachers, P.E.O. and  the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority.  She enjoyed quilting, reading, traveling and playing bridge.  She loved to dance and listen to music, and especially loved being with her family.

 

Survivors include her husband, Richard Oriano of Burlington; one daughter, Cynthia (Steve) Noack of Iowa City; one son, Gregory Oriano of Burlington; three grandchildren, Michael, William, and Claire Noack; one brother, Melvin (Wandalea) Ammer of Fort Madison; two sisters, Ann (Ken) Stutts of Grants Pass, OR and Mary Calder of Charlotte, NC; and 15 nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Vera, and one brother, Glen.

 

Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mrs. Oriano will be 10:30 AM Friday, January 16, 2015, at Messiah Lutheran Church with Reverend Susanne E. Smith officiating.  Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory following the service.  Burial will be in Nauvoo City Cemetery at a later date.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Messiah Lutheran Church and Hope Haven Area Development Center.
