Obituaries Thursday January 15th

Edward Joseph Kobs, 91, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa on Wednesday, January 14, 2015.

 

Born on February 19, 1923 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Edward B. and Marie E. Leiderman Kobs. He married Grace Evelyn May on August 6, 1945 in Burlington, Iowa. She died on November 26, 1983.

 

Edward was in maintenance at Murray Iron Works over 20 years and then worked at IAAP for 5 years. He enjoyed baking, reading and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.

 

He is survived by one son, Mark Kobs of Burlington, Iowa; one daughter, Patricia Mason of Moberly, Missouri; two brothers, Donald Kobs of New London, Iowa and James (Mary) Kobs of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; two sisters, Ruth Sullivan of Falon, Nevada and Mary O’Neill of Marion, Iowa; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace; parents; one daughter, Kathy Cross; one brother, Robert Kobs; and one sister, Dorothy Lott.

 

Funeral services for Edward Kobs will be held on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Prugh’s Chapel. Fr. Hai Dinh will officiate.  Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Hope Haven Area Development Center.

Charles Edward Underwood, 85 years, formerly of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 10:15 pm Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Hallmar of the Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  He was born September 9, 1929 at Denver, Colorado, the only child of Albert Harrell and Oleda Emmeline (Bush) Underwood.  On February 5, 1955, he married Anna Marie Gardner in Fort Madison, Iowa.

 

Mr. Underwood spent most of his life in Fort Madison and was a 1948 graduate of Fort Madison High School.  He was a veteran of the United States Army, He served as a field medic during the Korean War and was awarded a Bronze Star.  For nearly 30 years, he worked as a clerk for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1989.  He was a member and Deacon of the First Christian Church.  He enjoyed watching sports and was an Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan.

 

He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie Underwood, of Cedar Rapids, two sons, Mark Underwood, of Nevada, Iowa and Edward (Ginny) Underwood, of Winfield, Illinois; three daughters: Connie Williams, of Iowa; Susan Shultz, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Amy Saldeen, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Michael Underwood.

 

Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 am Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Barr Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services, Fort Madison.  A funeral service will follow and be held at 11:00 am Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Barr Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services, Fort Madison, Iowa with Reverend John Simpson officiating.  Burial with full military rites will be at Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa.  A memorial has been established, contributions may be left at the Barr Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services.  Online condolences to the Underwood family may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services website, www.barrmemorialchapel.com.
