Obituaries Wednesday January 21st

William Henry Smith, 88, of Burlington, died at 1:15 PM Monday, January 19, 2015, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

 

Born February 24, 1926, in Tule River, CA, he was the son of Henry Turner and Bertha Iona Burk Smith. On July 26, 1997, he married Leah Mae Gladman in Grand Junction, CO.  She died June 4, 2010.

 

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the WWII from July 21, 1944 until June 29, 1946.  He held the rank of Sergeant, served in the training batallion 59th anti aircraft placement stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX.  He was the chief of sections on the gun crew.  He received the good conduct medal- rifleman (expert), Campaign medal and the World War II victory medal.

 

He worked as an electrician at PG&E, he was a goldminer and a salesman.  He was an oil and acrylic painter painting deserts, animals and birds.  He loved horses, dogs, woodworking, gardening and gold mining.

 

Survivors include one step-daughter, Colleen A. Smith of Burlington; two sons, William Steve Smith of Laverne, AL, and Keith Wayne Smith of Andalusia, AL; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides his wife he was preceded in death by one son, Wesley Neal Smith, one daughter, Maureen Annett Henderson, sisters and his parents.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be no visitation or services.

Kevin Hugh Walters, 50, of Prairie View, Texas and formerly Wayland, Iowa, died suddenly, Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Bedford, Texas.  Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

 

Barbara Joyce Piper, 81, of Burlington, died at 4:12 pm Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.  Arrangements are pending at the Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

 

Roberta M. Nelson, 88, Burlington died Thursday 1/15 at Rose Bush Gardens in Burlington.

She is survived by 2 sons Steven of West Burlington and Ronald of Nixa, MO, 2 sisters, Louise Lichtenstein of DeWitt, Iowa and Audrey Vinyard of Cypress, TX, 3 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter, 1 step grandson and 2 step great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 11AM Thursday 1/22 at Lunning Chapel with burial in the Memorial Park Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 930 AM until the time of service.

 

Barbara Jean Schreen, 88, Burlington died Sunday 1/18 at Blair House Nursing and Rehab in Burlington.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Peggy Shipley of Carman, IL and Sally Hand of Burlington, 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren

Graveside funeral service and inurnment will be held at 11AM Friday 1/23 at the Aspen Grove Cemetery.  Lunning Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

 

Richard E. Hester, Sr., 83, Burlington died Monday 1/19 at Great River Hospice House.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, 2 sons, Richard of Bettendorf and Bill of Omaha, NE, 2 daughters, Cindy Edmunds of Denmark, IA and Lynn Matthews of Ashburn, VA, 2 sisters, Joyce Pender and Marilyn Mullins of Burlington, 3 brothers, Raymond of West Burlington, David of Burlington and James of Wayland, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Saturday 1/24 at Lunning Chapel with burial in the Aspen Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the time of service.
