Obituaries Thursday January 22nd

Kevin Hugh Walters, 50, of Prairie View, Texas and formerly of Wayland, died suddenly Tuesday, January 20, 2015 in Bedford, Texas.

 

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 PM, Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Wayland Mennonite Church where Mr. Walters was a member.  Pastor Wayne Heffner will officiate.  According to Mr. Walters wishes, the body has been cremated and inurnment will be held at a later date.  There will be no visitation.  In lieu of flowers, the Kevin Hugh Walters Memorial has been established.

 

Walter Robert “Bob” Foss, 82 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 6:22 pm Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, Iowa.    He was born June 6, 1932, at Hartford, Connecticut, the only child of son of Walter W. and Roxcy (Peabody) Foss.  On September 25, 1954, he married Carol Schroeder at Buffalo, New York.  They were married 60 years.  She survives.

 

Bob lived in Connecticut before moving to Fort Madison in 2010.  He loved music and was a professional musician who played the violin, bass, and mandolin in orchestras while in Hartford Connecticut.  He also worked as a tool maker and an inspector.  He and his wife, Carol, owned and operated Tri-Town Travel for 20 years.  He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Korean War.  He was a Catholic and a member of Holy Family Parish and the Knights of Columbus.  He was a member of the BPOE Elks Club, where he served as Past Exalted Ruler in Connecticut.  He was a member of the Lions Club while in Connecticut.

 

He is survived by his wife, Carol Foss, of Fort Madison, Iowa; four daughters: Jennifer (Steve) Cordova, of California; Kathryn (Michael) Brown, of Connecticut; Peg (Heather Fairchild) Foss, of New Hampshire; Sarah (David) Bonazza, of California; two sons, Jeffrey (Sheila) Foss, of Connecticut and Christopher (Ellen) Foss, of Ohio; 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

A rosary will be recited at 4:00 pm Friday, January 23, 2015 at the Barr Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services.  Visitation will follow and continue until 7:00 pm when a Christian Wake Service will be held at the funeral home.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Sacred Heart Church, Holy Family Parish, with Reverend David Wilkening as Celebrant.  Following the services his body will be cremated and private burial will be at Claypoole Cemetery, Wever, Iowa.  A memorial has been established for Holy Family Parish, Holy Trinity Catholic Schools, and The North Lee County Historical Society, contributions may be left at the church or the Barr Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services.  Online condolences to the Foss family may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel website, www.barrmemorialchapel.com.

 

Barbara Joyce Piper, 81, of Burlington, died at 4:12 PM Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

 

Born February 20, 1933, in Media, IL, she was the daughter of George Noah and Dorothy Elizabeth Kemp Brewer. She married Edward Wesley Huss in January 1949.  They later divorced.  On August 24, 1980, she married Clyde Wayne Piper in Burlington.

 

Barbara was a homemaker most of her life.

 

She enjoyed embroidery, making baby quilts for all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and playing cards.  She loved to read murder mysteries and especially cherished her time spent with grandchildren.

 

Survivors include her husband, Clyde; one son, Wesley (Dixie) Huss of Fort Madison; four daughters, Barbara Jean (Patrick) Peck of Oquawka, IL, Cathy (Mike) Stogdill of Wever, April Lynn (George) Hayes of Fort Madison, and Rose Marie Garner of Oquawka; four step-daughters, Colleen Parella of Dallas, TX, Charlene Piper of Oskaloosa, IA, Cheryl (Bill) Samson of St. Louis, MO, and Crystal Hopwood of Bloomfield, IA; 17 grandchildren; several step grandchildren; 40 plus great-grandchildren; one sister, Theo (Bill) Phillips of Media, IL; and one brother, Richard (June) Brewer of Rensselaer, IN.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Wilber Brewer, one step-granddaughter and one great granddaughter-in-law.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.

 

There will be no visitation.

 

The memorial service for Mrs. Piper will be 10:00 AM Saturday, January 24, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Amy Booker-Hirsch officiating.

 

A memorial has been established for American Diabetes Association.
