Obituaries Monday January 26th

Mary Beth Anderson, 67, of New London, died Sunday January 25th at her daughter’s home in Johnston.  Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

 

Bernice Catherine Mathys, 86, of West Burlington, died at 9:05 AM Sunday, January 25, 2015, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

 

Born February 5, 1928, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Edith E. Glasgow Miller. On August 22, 1946, she married Ralph Oscar Mathys in Keokuk, IA. He died December 30, 2014.

 

She was a homemaker, also working at Sheaffer Pen Company, Camp’s Laundry and did catering.

 

She was a member of First United Methodist Chruch, Sarah Circle and King’s Daughters.  She enjoyed playing cards, going to auctions, antique dishes, and puzzles.  She loved traveling with her husband in their motorhome.  Ralph and Bernice have traveled to all states except for Alaska along with traveling to 11 countries, including Austria, Israel, Czechoslovakia, England, Ireland, Scotland, and Denmark.

 

Survivors include four sisters, Esther Johnston of Orange Valley, CA, Delores George of Eagle Bend, MN, Wilma Schmidt of Leander, TX, and Shirley Price of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

 

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mrs. Mathys will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Melisa Bracht-Wagner officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

 

A memorial has been established to First United Methodist Church.

Jerry Allen Trumbo, 71, of West Burlington, died at 10:55 PM Friday, January 23, 2015, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

 

Born June 24, 1943, in Burlington, he was the son of Vern “Swede” Floyd and Ruth L. Wery Trumbo. On March 28, 1980, he married Marge Marie McCann in Burlington.

 

Jerry worked at Exide Battery for 28 years, and retired in 2001.  He also worked for Great River Medical Center for nine years and also was a volunteer there.

 

Jerry was a Burlington High School graduate.

 

He was a fan of NASCAR, Mark Martin was his favorite driver. He also enjoyed old cars.

 

Survivors include wife, Marge of West Burlington; two sisters, Karen (Larry) Drain of Mediapolis, and Joan (Jim) Forcier of Cherokee; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Hand.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Trumbo will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Ed Wisener, Sr. officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
