Could Conservation Trust Fund Help Pay for Iowa Streets, Roads, Bridges?

Governor Branstad has said he’d like to hear some new ideas about how to raise more money for Iowa’s deteriorating streets, roads and bridges…and it looks like Des Moines County’s Conservation Director may have one.

Chris Lee just returned from the state Capitol, where he and some like-minded folks were lobbying legislators to fund the almost-5-year-old “Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund,” that Iowa voters overwhelmingly approved in 2010. If the legislature institutes the one-cent sales tax, conservation efforts would get some of the money (3/8ths of each penny) and the rest (5/8ths) would go elsewhere.

Lee says the State should dedicate it to roads and bridges.
