Burlington Council Agrees to Silgan’s Requests, But is the Search Over Yet?

It’s not a done deal yet, but the Burlington City Council has given Silgan Containers Manufacturer a 20-year, 100% break on its property taxes…if the company wants it.

Economic Development Director Dave Toyer says Silgan would actually like a choice between the exemption the Council approved…and a property tax rebate, under which they’d pay the taxes but get them back.  The City will also waive an estimated $110,000 in permit fees and connection charges to Silgan, which would like to build in the Flint Ridge Business Park.

City Manager Jim Ferneau says the Council has made a significant commitment, but it still has to keep its collective fingers crossed. There’s also a request by Silgan for some street work and for that, the City would need a state RISE grant, which is not guaranteed.

Mayor Shane McCampbell had praise for the company and for the Greater Burlington Partnership and Toyer told the Council the salaries would amount to an average of more than $21 an hour.
