Four Injured in South 3rd Street Fire

Four residents of an Apartment Building on South 3rd Street in Burlington as well as one responding fireman were injured after a Sunday morning fire.

In a news release, the Burlington Fire Department said that the four injured residents were hurt while attempting to escape from the burning building. The fireman was injured while helping residents escape.

The fire was discovered around 5:56 am on Sunday. Responding Firefighters reported seeing fire and smoke from a third-floor window.

The 13-apartment building, owned by Richard Gerdner, is likely a total loss. The Red Cross is assisting residents with shelter and clothing.

The cause of the fire is unknown. Local departments and the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office are conducting a full investigation.
