Burlington, Des Moines in Competition for Flood Mitigation Money

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — The city of Burlington has had to reduce by $5 million its request for state grant money that would help the city build structures to reduce the risk of flooding.

The Hawk Eye reports Burlington and the city of Des Moines are the only two remaining cities vying for money available in the state’s Flood Mitigation Fund. Eight other cities already have received grants.

City Planner Charlie Nichols says Burlington was seeking $31.1 million but has recently been asked by the state to reduce its request to $26.2 million. The money would help build a floodwall to protect the downtown area from Mississippi River flooding.

City officials say the application review has been delayed from this month until the first of April.
