Burlington City Budget Has Slight Surplus, No Property Tax Increase, Garbage, Sewer Rates Will Hike

The Burlington City Council will hold a public hearing on their budget on March 2nd. The Council discussed the budget in a work session on Monday.

City Manager Jim Ferneau says that property taxes will not go up in the proposed 2015-2016 budget, however garbage rates will go up by about a quarter and sewer rates will rise.

“That’s not anything anybody really wants to have, but it’s lower than the 9%’s that we were having,” Ferneau told the City Council, “Last year we got it down to 5%, this year we’ve gotten it down to 3%. We’re hopeful that DNR will work with us…with that kind of rate increase.”

The budget contains a slight surplus of around $6,000 as the city continues to try and replenish their general fund after years of deficit spending.
