Man Detained After SCC, Westland Mall Footchase Not Related to Gunman Report

West Burlington Police say the person detained by police after a footchase through SCC’s Campus and Westland Mall was not related to the anonymous tip to Southeastern Community College that triggered a campus-wide search for two allegedly armed individuals at SCC’s West Burlington Campus on Monday.

After West Burlington Officers arrived at SCC, they approached Treyvon McKenzie of Lincoln, Nebraska, who apparently matched the description of one of the individuals. McKenzie ran out the exit door when police approached, dropping a backpack.

Police chased McKenzie across Highway 34, crossing Gear Avenue and even chasing McKenzie through JC Penney’s at Westland Mall before finally apprehending McKenzie in the Northwest parking lot.

McKenzie told officers he ran because of a fight he was involved in three or four days ago. He was arrested for interference with official acts for fleeing from officers. He wasn’t armed.

Students received information through the campus alert system shortly after police were notified. WBPD said in a news release that the incident involving two students with guns apparently occured on Friday, but wasn’t reported to faculty until Monday.
