SCC to Beef Up Security After Safety Alerts

Southeastern Community College is planning to beef up security at their West Burlington Campus after two different safety alerts in the span of two weeks triggered police response.

On Monday, an anonymous tip regarding armed men on campus ended with a dramatic footchase of a suspect across campus and through Westland mall. It was later found that that suspect, Treyvon McKenzie, was completely unrelated to the anonymous tip, and was running because he thought West Burlington police wanted to arrest him for a fight he participated in over the weekend–a fight police were not even aware he was in.

A little less than a week before, West Burlington Police responded to the campus after a violent threat was left towards a professor on the social sharing site “ratemyprofessors.com”. SCC’s Jeff Ebbing says that the threat and the tip about weapons on campus were not connected.

Ebbing says that West Burlington Police will conduct regular patrols on campus, and that SCC officials have increased coverage hours for it’s contracted security company.

SCC president Michael Ash says that the security and well being of students is the college’s top priority.
