Obituaries Thursday February 26th

Bonnie Raid, 93, of Burlington, died at 6:32 AM Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

 

Born September 3, 1921, near Wyman, IA, she was the daughter of Edward Wilson and Imo Ivalou Dill Fullerton. On May 3, 1941, she married Melvin Ernest Raid in Versailles, Missouri and they celebrated 68 years together. He died May 14, 2009.

 

Bonnie was a 1938 graduate of Columbus Junction High School.  She also was also a graduate of Parsons College in Fairfield, where she met Mel.  She taught school in a one room school house for two years before getting married and becoming a homemaker.

 

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.  She was an avid golfer, winning the Burlington Golf Club Championship four times.  She also enjoyed singing, playing the piano, and was an excellent seamstress.

 

Survivors include three daughters, Connie (Bob) Martin of Burlington, Mary Raid of West Burlington, and Marlene Raid of Burlington; one son, Melvin (Jolene) E. Raid Jr. of Granbury, TX; ten grandchildren, Cherie (Hal) Reid, Steven (Teresa Lehman) Martin, Beth (David) Edwards, Tricia (Randy) Bolton, Eric (Jen) D’Souza, Geoff D’Souza, Nicole (Brent) Pilgrim, Kathleen (Peter) Miller-King, Jessica (Joey) Boerner, and Meghan D’Souza-Ewinger; five great-grandchildren, Stacy and Christopher Martin, Emma Bolton, Ryan, Andrea, and Daniel Edwards, Lauryn and Allison Pilgrim, and Jack, Alex, and Owen D’Souza; one sister, Carol (Robert ) Coon of Washington, IA; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Fullerton of Washington, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Patricia Raid Harrison, two brothers, Frank Fullerton and LaVon “Sam” Fullerton, two sisters, Evelyn Long and Catherine Story, and one great-granddaughter, Ally Bolton.

 

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 5:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM Sunday, March 1, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mrs. Raid will be 10:00 AM Monday, March 2, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Denny Coon officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Burlington Golf Club following the burial.

 

Memorials have been established for Hope Haven and Grace United Methodist Church.

Linda L Smith, 72, Burlington died Sun 2/22 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

She is survived by her husband, John, daughters, Barbara Christianson of Waukon and Debra Roller of Oquawka, a sister, Beverly Johnson of Mt Pleasant, 2 brothers, Kenneth Barton of Aroma Park, IL and Robert Barton of Salem, Iowa and 4 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1030AM Fri 2/27 at Oak Street Baptist with burial in the Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Thursday 2/26 from 6-8 PM in Lunning Chapel.
