Salt Lake City: Hospital Checks 9 Firefighters after Station Catches Fire

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Nine Salt Lake City firefighters who escaped a fire that erupted at their own station have been taken to a hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation.

Authorities say the building caught fire early Tuesday.

Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay says in a statement that the nine firefighters fled the building and then quickly returned with a truck to fight the blaze.

Two dozen additional firefighters soon joined them. When the fire was extinguished, the nine were taken to a hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the blaze, which left the second floor of the building with heavy damage.
