BPD Officer Chris Chiprez was honored during a City Council Meeting on Monday.

“I’m humbled and honored to be selected as Officer of the Year,” Chiprez told the Council, “Growing up, being raised in this community, I’m just proud to come back and serve the community I grew up in.”

BPD Chief Doug Beaird said Chiprez was given the award for tireless dedication. He was nominated by his fellow officers.

The proclamation from the city council cites two incidents in which Chiprez went above and beyond the call of duty–personally saving several victims of a January 2014 apartment fire and holding up a man attempting to commit suicide by hanging until officers could arrive to cut him down.

Chiprez was also nominated for Iowa Police Officer of the year. The winner of that distinction will be announced in May.
