West Burlington Approves 2015-2016 Budget

The West Burlington City Council approved their budget last night. It includes $11,600 in general fund deficit spending, that’s down from $251,665 in deficit spending in 2013.

It also includes an unchaged property tax rate–$10.10 per $1,000 in assessed valuation. That’s the same rate contained in the 2014-2015 Fiscal year budget.

Mayor Hans Trousil told the council that that puts them at the second lowest property tax rate in Des Moines County and 4th lowest among cities of it’s size in Iowa.

It does contain a higher water rate–a jump of 3%, a higher garbage rate, up a quarter at $10.50, and a higher sewer rate with an increase of 22.%. Trousil cites federal Environmental Protection Agency mandates for the higher sewer rate. Sewer rate money will be used to fund mandated improvements at the city’s water plant.

Trousil says that the city will receive around $50,000 more per year in road use tax money thanks to the 10 cent jump in the states gas tax. Part of that money will be used to redo seal coating and perform sidewalk repair this year.
