Burlington PD to Receive Dog Encounter Training

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — A fatal shooting by a Burlington police officer has prompted the department to start online training sessions geared toward encounters with dogs.

The Hawk Eye reports the shooting death of 34-year-old Autumn Steele by an officer led the Burlington Police Department to training offered through the U.S. Department of Justice. Investigators say Officer Jesse Hill responded to a domestic disturbance on Jan. 6 when he fired to bullets to thwart an attack by a dog, one of which missed the German shepherd and hit Steele in the chest.

Chief Doug Beaird said Thursday that prior to the shooting, officers had received little training on how to interact with dogs.

The online training with the DOJ consists of five 10-minute videos. Beaird says he’s also exploring options offered in Iowa.
