Expect Increased Police Presence for St. Patrick’s Day Weekend

Local Sheriff’s Departments are planning increased police presence for St. Patrick’s day festivities this weekend.

St. Patrick’s Day is usually correlated with a spike in drunk driving accidents and fatalities. Last year, 55% of of crash fatalities involved drunk drivers with 75% of those fatalities involving drivers who were over twice the legal limits. Those numbers, over the past four years, have translated to 64 avage deaths on the road in the US each St. Patricks Day Weekend.

One way to avoid tragedy on St. Patrick’s day is to designate a sober driver–before you start drinking. If you don’t have one, rely on family, friends, and public transporation to get home safely.

Don’t expect to get away with it if you do make the poor choice and drive drunk. Law enforcement throughout the region–Des Moines County, Lee County, Henry County– all of them are going to have additional deputies on the roads this weekend.
