The color burst at the end of the race was a huge draw.

Another Shamrock Shuffle to benefit the Burlington/West Burlington Kiwanis club is in the books.

Kiwanis spokeswoman Melissa Jones says that over 1,000 participants showed up for the 5k Run/Walk to benefit local afterschool programs.

“We had over 900 register beforehand and 100 register [on race day],” said Jones. “It was a beautiful day, that helped.”

While final numbers aren’t tallied, Jones expects that the event raised around $21,000.

Rob Despain was the first across the finish line, surprising even himself.

“Tuesday I was running and slipped and fell on the ice,” Despain told KBUR moments after the race, “So I did not expect to win today.”

Despain won a gift certificate for a free pair of shoes.

The Shamrock Shuffle is a “color run” where participants have colored corn starch thrown at them by race-watchers. It culminates in a large “color burst” once everyone is across the finish line.
