Much Ado About Yard Waste at West Burlington City Council

There was some headbutting last night at the West Burlington City Council over issues pertaining to yard waste collection in the city.

Three plans took center stage in the debate during a work session following the meeting: the first, proposed by city manager Dan Giffords, involved city crews working most of the year picking up bags of yard waste themselves at least once a week. The second was a proposal to construct a dumping site where residents could bring their yard waste for future disposal, and the third was an investment into leaf vaccuuming trucks.

Tempers briefly flared up between Mayor Hans Trousil and Councilman Rick Raliegh. Raliegh was in favor of the dumping site proposal whiel Trousil prefered allowing city crews to complete the work.

“If you want to spend $70,000 or whatever, unnecessarily, I’m going to veto it,” Trousil told Raliegh.

Trousil later offered up a compromise plan, saying “Let it go for one season. And if everyones yard is filled up with bags and the [city crews] can’t keep up, do a site. Pay the money, do a site.”

The council took time during the meeting to honor late fire chief Mike Heim with a moment of silence. A memorial service is being planned for April 11th.
