Obituaries Tuesday April 7th

Mrs. Vivian Waterman Brill, 80, of Stronghurst, Illinois, died Monday, April 6, 2015 at the Henry County Health Center, Mt. Pleasant.  Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

 

Mrs. Lillie R. Anders, 88, of LaHarpe, IL passed away at 9:28 AM Sunday, April 5, 2015 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, IA.

She was born June 29, 1926 in LaCrosse, IL, the daughter of Clinton and Helen Johnson Dunn. On December 11, 1948 she married Ray Anders in Carthage, IL. He preceded her in death on February 22, 1993.

Lil graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1945. She worked as a waitress at several restaurants, including Dunn’s Café, Traveler’s Inn and Sugar Daddy’s. She also babysat and cleaned homes. She loved animals, especially her cats. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. Lil was a member of the LaHarpe Union Church.

She is survived by two sons, Jerry (Shirley) Anders of Monmouth, IL and Tracey (Cindy) Anders of LaHarpe, one daughter, Christy Vincent of LaHarpe, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Kelly, two brothers, Dale and Donald (Alf) Dunn and one sister, Betty White.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, April 9, 2015 at the Union Church in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche and Rev. Rick Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe Cemetery. There will be no formal visitation but friends are welcome to stop at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe anytime between 3:00 and 8:00 PM Wednesday. Allen D. “Sam” Samberg, 87, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa, on Saturday, April 4, 2015.

 

Born on December 9, 1927 in Ames, Iowa, he was the son of Herbert A. and Golda V. Samberg. He married Delores Reid on November 20, 1947. They later divorced. He married Carolyn Ensminger on January 14, 1978.

 

Al graduated from Burlington High School then served his country as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific Theater. He was a 60+ year member of Sheet Metal Workers Local #91 and 50+ year member of the American Legion. He was also a member of Moose Lodge, Eagles Club, V.F.W. and First Christian Church Disciples of Christ.

 

Al loved auto racing. He teamed with Delmer Donaldson in 1950 to build their first stock car.  In 1952 he partnered with his father-in-law, the late Henry Binder, to race a ‘39 Ford Coupe. He raced at the old fairgrounds track in Burlington for many years.

 

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; one son, Randy Samberg of Burlington, Iowa; two step-daughters, Pam Shultz of Chesterfield, Virginia and Candy Murray of Coralville, Iowa; two step-sons, Bobby Ensminger of Burlington, Iowa and Todd Ensminger of Stronghurst, Illinois; twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Scott and two sisters, Wynone and Betty.

 

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, Burlington, Iowa. Pastor David Yonker will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Following the graveside committal service, a time of food and fellowship will be held at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ.

 

The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ Building Fund. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.

 

Pamela S. (Spiker) Houghton, 62, of Lomax, IL passed away at 11:10 AM Sunday, April 5, 2015 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, IA.

She was born April 10, 1952 in LaHarpe, IL, the daughter of John and Amy Lorine Robinson Spiker. She married Gary Houghton. He preceded her in death.

Pamela was a cook at various restaurants. She enjoyed scrap booking, crafts, gardening, yard sales and horses. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren.

She is survived by 3 daughters, Bindy (John) Zimmerman of Martinsburg, PA, Becky Heath of Keithsburg, IL and Johnna Snyder of Kirksville, MO, 5 grandchildren, Haylei Zimmerman, Clinton Zimmerman, Tanner Heath, Victoria Heath and Landen Snyder, 2 sisters, Kathy Keith of Lomax and Lori “Buffy” Spiker of Unionville, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

A visitation will be held Thursday, April 9, 2015 from 4:00 until 6:00 PM at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM.
