Lee County to Offer Smartphone Voting Option

Lee County may be the first in the state to offer a new type of voting technology access through a smartphone. The county is purchasing about two-dozen new voting machines, and County Auditor Denise Fraise says the most interesting feature of the devices is the ability to offer “mobile voting.” Yes, voting on your smartphone.

But the smartphone option doesn’t mean you can vote from home.

“You still have to come to the polls to check in, but you can hold your smartphone up to the scanners that we will be purchasing, and it will just print out your ballot,” Fraise explains.

Fraise hopes to have the new machines in time to show the public how they work before the school and city elections this fall. The new voting machines will cost nearly 200-thousand dollars.
