Obituaries Tuesday April 14th

Jerry Robert Baker, age 45, of rural Wapello, died Sunday morning, April 12, 2015, in a motorcycle accident near Oakville.  The son of Jerry Robert Baker and Connie O’Callaghan Baker, he was born on March 23, 1970 in Davenport.  He married Kelly Melissa Guberud on August 27, 2011 Lake Odessa in Wapello.

 

He had worked in installation for Wisconsin Terrazzo and Tile through the Allied Craft Workers Local.

 

Jerry enjoyed boating, motorcycling, kayaking, mechanical repairing, and family activities especially outdoors with his boys and his nieces and nephews.  He was known as a child whisperer.

 

Jerry is survived by his wife, Kelly; two sons, Logan Ryan and Lucas Lee both at home; his mother, Connie Baker of Wapello; a sister, Laura K. Hoover of Wapello; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Tammy Bloomer Bealer.

 

Following cremation a Celebration of Life for Jerry will be held at his home at Lake Odessa on Saturday, April 18, 2015, beginning at noon.

 

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of his two boys.

Marjorie A. Wellman, 94, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa, Sunday, April 12, 2015.

 

Born on July 4, 1920 in Iowa City, Iowa, she was the daughter of Fred E. and Jessie J. Beltz Huffman. She married Herman J. Wellman on June 25, 1940 in Iowa City, Iowa. He died on November 15, 2012.

 

Marjorie and Herman owned and operated the Big Dipper Ice Cream Shop on North 6th & High for 19 years. She also worked at Younkers. She enjoyed making quilts, sewing, baking, working with jello molds and making mints for special occasions. She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She had a “green thumb” in regards to house plants and flowers. She was a member of the Golden Oldies and SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.

 

She is survived by one son, Gerald Wellman of Los Angeles, California; four daughters, Patricia (Fred) Wilson of Prescott Valley, Arizona, Deborah (Jim) Brown of Burlington, Laura (Bill) Bryant of Burlington, and Doreen (Chuck) Pope of West Burlington; son-in-law, Richard “Dick” Rosenbury of Burlington; 25 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Barbara Rosenbury; one brother, Lyle Huffman; and three sisters, Mae Gioimo, LaVae Sueppel and Martha Gegenheimer.

 

The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church on Friday, April 17, 2015 at 10:00 a.m.  Fr. Marty Goetz will officiate. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited in Prugh’s Chapel on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. followed by the family receiving friends until 8:00 p.m.
