Obituaries Thursday April 16th

Delores Elaine Carter, 84, formerly of Burlington, Iowa, died at Presence Cor Mariae Center, Rockford, Illinois, Friday morning, March 20, 2015.

Born on November 11th, 1930 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Cecil E. Gillis and Eva C. Hand Gillis. She married Louis W. “Wally” Carter on June 25, 1949 in Burlington, Iowa. He died on February 1, 2007.

Delores attended Burlington High School She was a homemaker and had worked at IRC in Burlington, Iowa for many years. Delores and Wally made their home in Burlington while their children, David and Cyndie, were growing up. After many years in the private sector Wally began working for Carl A. Nelson, which allowed Delores and Wally the opportunity to see many new places with this new job venture. Delores and Wally were a fun loving couple. In life they enjoyed a couple of sea cruises, casino visits, boating on the river, including several extended boat trips on the Mississippi River with good friends. Delores also loved shopping and dancing, including Square Dancing, which she and Wally enjoyed whenever possible.

When Wally retired they wintered in Apache Junction, Arizona for many years which Delores enjoyed as she loved the sun and warm weather. Following Wally’s death, Delores returned to Burlington and lived with her brother Donald Gillis. In May of 2014, Delores moved to Sunnybrook Assisted living and Memory Care. She resided at Sunnybrook until October 2014, when she moved to Presence Cor Mariae Center, Rockford, Illinois. Delores and Wally were members of the Eagles Club and SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.

She is survived by one son, David Carter of Rockford, Illinois; one daughter, Cynthia Riffel of Camdenton, Missouri; six grandchildren, Jacob Carter, Joshua  Carter, Jonathan Carter, Lenzie Riffel, Ryan Riffel and Alexis Riffel; nine great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wally, her parents, Cecil and Eva and two brothers, Cecil Gillis Jr. and Donald Gillis.

The Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 18th 2015, 11:00 a.m. at Prugh’s Chapel, Burlington, Iowa. Father Marty Goetz will officiate. The family will receive friends at Prugh’s Chapel one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, at the request of Delores, a memorial has been established for SS. John & Paul Catholic Church. Mary Theresa Johnston, 94, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Klein Center, West Burlington, Iowa, on Tuesday, April 14, 2015.

 

Born on August 14, 1920 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of George and Theresa Weniger Meller. She married and divorced.

 

Mary was a mail clerk for National Research Bureau for 39 years. Her knowledge and memory of national zip codes and postal zones was amazing. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed tatting. Mary had a “green thumb” and enjoyed the outdoors, especially on nice, sunny days. She also enjoyed short trips, working with her family as they traveled & took care of lawns. She was of the Catholic faith.

 

She is survived by one daughter, Rose (Allen) Avery of Burlington, Iowa, six nieces and two nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

 

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Prugh’s Chapel. Fr. Marty Goetz will officiate. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

 

Friends may call on Monday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. in Prugh’s Chapel. A Rosary will be recited on Monday at 3:00 p.m. in Prugh’s Chapel. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice
