Obituaries Monday May 4th

Margaret Elaine Hansen, 73, of Burlington, Iowa, died at University of Iowa Hospitals, in Iowa City, Iowa on Sunday, April 26, 2015.

 

Margaret fashioned a beautiful life with a foundation of faith, family, friendships and service.  Her life journey was made with a sense of fun and adventure and always, with an abiding love for those she cared for.

 

Born on September 24, 1941 in Des Moines, Iowa, she was the daughter of John Laverl & Mildred Ruth Walker Dooley. She married Robert Lowell Hansen on May 1, 1965 in Burlington, Iowa.

 

Margaret was employed at the Burlington Hawk Eye newspaper for 24 years and the March of Dimes for 5 years.  After she retired she worked part time for the Community Foundation of Des Moines County.  She previously worked for Make Today Count.

 

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and was a Lay Eucharistic Minister, Pastoral Care Team Member, and Outreach Member and was on the board of Directors of the Diocese of Iowa. Margaret was on the Commission of Ministry that selects candidates for ordained ministry. She worked on One World One Church work in Africa.  Margaret also took communion to the shut-ins.  She belonged to a Women’s Bible Study Group since 1998.  She was a member of Chapter H.U.P.E.O., Burlington Fine Arts Leagues, Hetta Gilbert, Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra; former member of the Burlington Planning Commission and Zoning Board, and also served on several committees of the Des Moines County Historical Society.

 

Margaret explored the world with her best friend, Bob, her family and friends.  She willingly shared her talents for organization and aesthetics to enrich our community.  Margaret especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and niece and nephew.

 

She is survived by her husband Bob, one son, Todd W. (Diane) Hansen of Chicago, Il; one daughter, Jennifer C. (Tony) Sadiq of Des Moines, IA; four grandchildren, Grant R. Hansen, Harper L. Hansen, Jacob D. Sadiq & Elizabeth Sadiq; one sister, Victoria Dooley of Chicago, IL; niece, Samantha and nephew, Jonathon; cousins, Sally Deke & David & Sandy Deke.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents.

 

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Christ            Episcopal Church.  The Rt. Rev. Alan Scarfe, D.D. Bishop of Iowa will officiate with The Rev. Patricia Cashman and The Rev. Pat Genereux.   Interment of ashes will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends on Monday evening, at Christ Episcopal Church May 4, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Christ Episcopal Church and Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra.

 

Following the graveside service friends are invited to join the family at the Majestic Estate Events Center (Former Art Center) 620 Washington Street, Burlington, Iowa.

 

Lois Jean (Burkhart) Russell, age 90 of Gladstone, Illinois died at 2:31 a.m. Sunday May 3, 2015 at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born November 6, 1924, the daughter of Fay J. and Ruby Painter Burkhart. On July 18, 1943, she married Delmar Briscoe Russell in Dallas City, Illinois. He preceded her in death on May 2, 1998.

 

Mrs. Russell was Salutatorian of the 1942 graduating class of Dallas City High School. She then graduated from Gem City Business College in Quincy, Illinois. After graduation, and prior to her marriage, she worked at Camp Ellis, near Macomb, Illinois. Later, she worked for the LaHarpe Creamery, Gladstone Grain Company, Gulfport River Terminal, and sold Pioneer Seed Corn as well as being a full time mother and homemaker.

 

She enjoyed knitting, and made many baby blankets for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved vegetable and flower gardening, and solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She also enjoyed playing cards with family, friends and neighbors, and belonged to many clubs. She was a member of the Gladstone United Methodist Church, Order Of The Eastern Star, and the Red Hat Club.

 

Survivors include three sons, Fay (Suzanne) Russell and Gail (Diane) Russell, both of Biggsville, IL, Larry (Pat) Russell of Gladstone, IL, four daughters, Delma (Nick) Plackett of Galesburg, IL, Nancy (Larry) Gapen of Carman, IL, Janet (Lloyd) Russell-Jacobs of NewLondon, IA, Harriet Russell of Stronghurst, IL, eighteen grandchildren, and twenty nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, Betty Shaw, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.

 

The funeral service for Mrs. Russell will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday May 8, 2015 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Jon Warren officiating. Burial will follow in the Carman Cemetery, Carman, IL. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Banks & Beals, where the family will be present from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Memorials have been established for the Gladstone United Methodist Church, Gladstone Ambulance Service, Gladstone Fire Department, or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Terri Jo Neally (Zimmerman), 56, of Fort Madison, died at 4:18 am Thursday, April 30, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

 

Born July 15, 1958, in Carthage, IL, she was the daughter of Eddie and Carolyn Sibert Zimmerman. She married John Neally in 1992. They later divorced.

 

Terri was a commercial salesperson for Mediacom.

 

She was a 1977 graduate of Carthage High School.

 

She enjoyed attending church services, shopping, and spending time with her family. She was a very social person.

 

Survivors include her parents, Eddie and Carolyn Zimmerman of Burnside, IL; one son, Jared Lee Neally of Keokuk, IA; one daughter, Olivia Jo Neally of Fort Madison, IA; one grandson, Colter; one brother, Tony Lee (Cheryl) Zimmerman of Fort Madison, IA; two nephews, Larry Paul Zimmerman and Matthew Lee Zimmerman, both of Fort Madison; and several cousins.

 

She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents, and aunts and uncles.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.

 

The celebration of life for Terri will be 10:00 AM Saturday, May 9, 2015, at the enclosed shelter house in Rodeo Park. All family and friends are invited.

 

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.
