West Burlington City Council Passes Rate Hikes, Will Take Effect July 1st

The West Burlington City Council officially approved a number of rate hikes during a Wednesday night meeting.

Water rates in the city will see an increase of around 3%, matching an increase made by Burlington this year. Sewer rates will climb quite a bit, a 22% increase from last year.

Garbage collection rates will jump a quarter, from $10.25 per month per house to $10.50 a month. Recycling costs will jump a dime to $3.45 per house per month from $3.35.

City Manager Dan Gifford says that the large hike in Sewer and Water rates is due to an unfunded federal mandate for sewer plant upgrades. He expects another year of large increases next year.

Those rate hikes go into effect on July 1st.
