Muscatine Man Shot By Louisa County Deputies Following Traffic Chase

A Muscatine man was shot by Louisa County Sheriff’s Deputy after Police say he fled from a traffic stop and allegedly began driving towards deputies with his car.

A Press Release from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says that 55 year old Richard Spurling of Muscatine failed to stop for deputies attempting to pull him over for traffic violations. Spurling then allegedly took off in his vehicle and deputies gave chase before the pursuit came to a stop near the intersection of Fruitland Road and Crimson Road.

As deputies approached the stopped vehicle, Spurling allegedly began driving towards the deputies, that when one of the deputies shot Spurling in the chest.

Spurling was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No deputies were injured.

Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations Agent Richard Rahn tells KBUR that the deputies have yet to be interviewed. As of Wednesday afternoon, Spurling is not facing any charges related to driving his vehicle towards the officers.

Spurling is, however, charged with Eluding Police, Operating a Motor Vehicle while Intoxicated, Driving on a Revoked License, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and five minor traffic offenses.
