A West Burlington man is in jail after police say he assaulted a West Burlington Police Officer while that officer was attempting to arrest another man.

Police initially came into contact with 32 year old Michael J. Hurka and 56 year old Kevin White while responding to a report of a vehicle burglary. While asking White for identification, police say he became uncooperative and did not comply with police orders. As the officer was attempting to arrest White, he allegedly resisted and thats when police say that Hurka attempted to grab and pull the officer to the ground.

Hurka was arrested and charged with Aggravated Public Intoxication, Interference with Official Acts, Assault on a Police Officer, and Burglary of a Motor Vehicle after a witness told police she saw Hurka enter a vehicle and steal a purse. That purse was located on the scene.

White is charged with Public Intoxication and Interference with Official Acts. White was released on his own recognizance while Hurka remains in the Des Moines County Jail.
