One Person Shot After Gunman Opens Fire At Coralville Mall

Information from the Iowa City Press Citizen

At least one person has been shot during an incident at the Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville.

A witness says a mall security officer who had been fired earlier in the day shot a teenage girl Friday night at the Mall.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that several shots rang out in the food court area near the carousel entrance about 7:30 p.m.

Ryan Ross, who works at a mall kiosk, said he recognized the shooter as a security officer in his mid-20s who had been fired earlier in the day. Ross said after he heard the shots fired, the shooter went past him.

“He made eye contact with me, I saw the gun and he sprinted off” down the main corridor of the mall, Ross said.

Jeff Carew of Tiffin said he was within feet of the victim, who he described as being 17 or 18, when the shooting happened.

“I heard three shots and watched the girl fall,” Carew said.

Alex Halter of Iowa City also said the victim was a teenage girl. “I was heading toward the food court and heard three gunshots and in 10 seconds everyone was running,” Halter said.

Gov. Terry Branstad’s office says a suspect the Coral Ridge Mall shooting is in custody.

“Public is not believed to be in further danger,” spokesman Jimmy Centers wrote in a tweet at 9:11 p.m. Friday.
